And while Pompey had the lion's share of the ball in the second half, they failed to find an equaliser and Chuks Aneke's late header wrapped up the three points for Lee Bowyer’s men.

Jackett believes that whille Charlton made it difficult to be breached, Pompey didn’t help themselves by delivering disappointing service into the box.

The boss said: ‘Charlton defended very well. The first half, we had the majority of it.

‘There were two big chances - the goal from Williams and Ronan Curtis' opportunity in the first five minutes.

'We went into half-time 1-0 down but were well in it. There was wave after wave of pressure without being able to find the chance. In the end, ultimately, the goals couldn't get us back into the game.

‘To be fair, they defended very well and some of our crossing was too near the keeper. Generally, our cross has been good and we have good crossing ability in the team. That wasn’t quite right.

‘A combination of them defending well, us not finding the cutting edge or final pass and too many balls near the goalkeeper.

‘Although it was wave after wave and we were on top for the majority, we couldn’t find the cutting edge and the goals to get us back into the game.’
