The Sky Blues claimed all three points on offer after substitute Matt Godden scored the only goal of the game on 84 minutes – just two minutes after coming on.

But the goal game just moments after Steve Seddon skied an effort over the bar – while Blues sub Ellis Harrison also missed from point-blank range after home keeper Marko Marosi made a fine save just after the hour mark.

The winner came at a time when Pompey were clearly on top, following a double substitution that saw Harrison and Marcus Harness replaced John Marquis and Ryan Williams.

Harrison had another chance in injury-time as the visitors attempted to salvage a point from their trip to St Andrew’s.

However, it wasn’t to be their night in front of goal – something reluctantly accepted by Jackett at the final whistle.

The manager said: ‘It was a tight game, I did feel particularly in the second half we were on top and it looked like we were going to break through.

‘I’m looking for that moment, that pass.

‘The keeper made a couple of good saves – Seddon had a chance and hit it over the bar.

‘I’m looking for those moments to be the decisive ones.

‘To be fair to Coventry, though, they defended well the period we were on top.

‘They stayed in the game to be able to get that late winner that got them three points.’
