Knight: Portsmouth defender must dust himself down after Wycombe error

Have your say

Legend Alan Knight gives his verdict on Pompey’s 2-2 draw with Wycombe Wanderers...

It was a strange game in lots of respects.

Wycombe came to do a job – like a lot of teams will this season.

They wanted to slow the game down and you know that’s going to happen.

I don’t think the official helped the game, although I’m not blaming him for the result.

Personally, I wouldn’t want to watch Wanderers play week-in, week-out, although Bryn Morris took his opening goal very well.

Maybe Pompey should have closed him down a bit quicker but it was a good finish.

After half-time, we played at a faster pace.

It wasn’t brilliant but the Blues worked hard and both goals basically came from Craig MacGillivray’s long kicks and then getting the ball wide to put into the box.

Giving away a penalty would have been hard for Burgess to take, especially after his mistake against Shrewsbury beforehand.

Some of those incidents are given, some aren’t. But if you make that sort of challenge you give the referee the opportunity to make the decision.

Christian was one of the outstanding players at Peterborough and if he’s picked at Rochdale he’ll do the same again.

He won’t like the criticism – nobody does – but he’s experienced enough to not allow that to affect him.

I made plenty of mistakes during my playing days. You can’t hide from yourself when you do.

But you need to have the confidence in yourself to put it at the back of your mind and not let it faze you going forward.

I have had my confidence knocked in the past and he can’t hide.

There's no hiding place, like there wasn’t when I was a goalkeeper – even more so with social media in the modern day.

It’s not nice but your team-mates and most people know you don’t make mistakes on purpose.

Christian has to dust himself down and, as Paul Cook used to say, has to go again.

Nevertheless, Pompey are still unbeaten from nine games.

I know everyone will be disappointed we’re not top of the league but sometimes that isn’t a bad thing.

We keep picking up points and for some strange reason our away form has been better than at Fratton Park.
