That’s the verdict of Tom Naylor, who is convinced the fervent home support can drive Pompey onto an unlikely triumph over Arsenal.

During seven Premier League seasons, Fratton Park staged defeats for Liverpool (four times), Manchester United (three), Spurs (three), Everton (three), Leeds (three) and Villa (two).

However, they never managed to beat Arsenal or Chelsea.

On Monday, the Gunners will venture to the south coast for the first time in more than a decade, having been handed an FA Cup fifth-round visit.

And Pompey’s skipper feels the home support can rally their side like old times.

Naylor said: ‘From day one when I came into the team for that first game at Fratton, the atmosphere was incredible.

‘It’s probably the best crowd I have ever had and I can see why people think they can’t play in this environment – because they aren’t used to it.

‘The club have beaten Liverpool here over the years and teams will struggle to come and play due to the atmosphere and hostility. The crowd is a massive factor and a big 12th man for us.

‘It’s just a different atmosphere. In the Premier League you can get 60,000 there, but the likes of West Ham are quite a way from the pitch and the crowd can’t get on top of it.

‘Compare that to Fratton, which is quite enclosed, on top of close, so close to the pitch and builds the atmosphere. Maybe that’s the reason.

‘The way we are playing at the minute, confidence is sky high.

‘Whoever we play we are confident of beating them, even if it’s Arsenal, especially the way we’re playing at home.’

Pompey’s sole Fratton Park defeat this season, in all competitions, has come against Southampton.

Watched by 18,707 in September, the Premier League side ran out 4-0 winners to progress in the Carabao Cup.

And Naylor relished that Fratton experience, regardless of the disappointing outcome.

He added: ‘Even when we were warming up it was packed, but that is a big rivalry, they don’t come by every week.

‘Sometimes the players don’t really feel the atmosphere on the pitch, I don’t, you are so focused on playing football.

‘Games like Southampton, though, I do get a buzz out of. Even when losing 4-0, there was non-stop singing, non-stop dancing, that drove us through until the end.

‘We felt a bit down at the end because we wanted to do it for the fans, but they were brilliant and stayed with us from the first minute to the last.’
