The Blues continued their winless opening to the campaign with a confidence-draining 2-1 defeat to Wigan at Fratton Park.
Kenny Jackett’s men completely lost their way after a busy opening with goals in either half doing the damage before Ellis Harrison grabbed a consolation late on.
Johnson gave an honest account of where things stand for Pompey at this early stage of the campaign.
And the summer arrival from Accrington feels his new club have quickly arrived at a point where need to show if they have the character to put things right.
Johnson said: ‘It’s not a great start. I’m not going to stand here and say it is.
‘It’s disappointing and it’s hard to pick yourselves up, but it’s not good feeling sorry for ourselves.
‘You’re not going to get any points by feeling sorry for yourself, so we have to turn it around and put it right. There’s lads in the dressing room with a lot of experience and we have to put it right.’
