And the Blues’ new head coach has laid down an intention to get his team’s campaign firing again off the back off high-tempo attacking football.

And the 42-year-old made it clear how what kind of philosophy he will be impressing on the team.

Cowley said: ‘We have a clear way of playing.

‘We want to play fast, attacking football and get supporters on the edge of their seats and we want to be intense with the way that we defend.

‘It’s a high-energy game that we play which requires a lot of commitment from the players.’

It’s a fast-paced turnaround for the duo as they go into their maiden game in charge against Paul Cook’s Ipswich Town tomorrow.

They spent this morning meeting the players and then undertaking a training session at Fratton Park.

The focus there was on implementing a few, clear and important philosophies on the players, rather than overloading them with information.

The brothers believe those ideas can quickly be implemented against Cook’s team on his return to his old club.

Cowley added: ‘The first thing is you have to get buy-in.

‘So you have to clearly convey your message.

‘We’re cautious there’s a game and we’ve had to think about what principles are most important for the game.

‘We haven’t been able to cover everything, that’s obvious.

‘If we’d told them 100 things they would’ve probably have forgotten 99.

‘So we’ve focussed on three or four areas where we feel we can get some quick wins in the group.

‘We trained on those ideas and we hope to see elements of those principles in the performance against Ipswich.’
