Oxford defender's admission ahead of Portsmouth play-off crunch clashes

Oxford United defender Josh Ruffels admitted he’s preparing for the biggest games of his career against Pompey.

And the left-back has had to keep reminding himself he’s preparing for the League One play-offs to ensure he doesn’t take his foot off the gas.

The last spot in the Championship next season remains up for grabs when the four-team tournament commences next week.

The U’s travel to Fratton Park on Friday for the semi-final first leg before the return clash takes place at the Kassam Stadium on Monday, July 6.

The winners will then face either Wycombe or Fleetwood at Wembley.

Ruffels, who has made 266 appearances since arriving at Oxford in 2013, is doing all he can to stay switched on ahead of facing Kenny Jackett’s side.

And although he’s faced Premier League powerhouses Manchester City previously, he regards he games against Pompey as far more important.

Speaking to the Oxford Mail, Ruffels said: ‘It will definitely be the biggest games (of my career).

‘You’re sat at home all the time and you have to remind yourself that next week is going to be massive.

‘I like to do it as much as I can so I get in that mind frame, otherwise you can relax a bit and get into a little bubble of not thinking about it too much.

‘I’d rather be focused on it every day and making sure I’m ready for it.’

Two members of the Oxford camp tested positive for Covid-19 earlier this month and had to self-isolate.

A pair of Pompey players too tested positive during early rounds of EFL testing.

If any tests come back positive on Wednesday, the individuals will be forced to sit out the crunch showdowns.

Ruffels revealed he’s not leaving home unless he has to ahead of facing Pompey to give himself the best opportunity of being available.

He added: ‘I’ve stopped playing golf and have been getting home deliveries, just being as careful as I can.

‘What’s the point in taking a risk when there’s so much on the line?

‘It’s three weeks of your life to be sensible, do everything right and give yourself the best opportunity.’
