Here are a few words to set the scene for each of our archive offerings, which reflect on Boxing Day battles...

2006: West Ham 1 Pompey 2

As Boxing Day approached, Pompey lay sixth in the Premier League table – 13 places above opponents West Ham. A Linvoy Primus double helped ensure the three points came back to Fratton Park on a day which saw Pompey climb up to fifth in the top flight.

2003: Pompey 2 Spurs 0

Boxing Day in 2003 presented Pompey with a chance to leapfrog Spurs in the top-flight table. With the Blues struggling in their opening season of Premier League football, lying in 18th place, two goals from Patrik Berger gave fans something to cheer in a game that had a bitter-sweet feel after Tim Sherwood broke his leg.

1997: Pompey 3 QPR 1

Pompey beat QPR for the first time in 25 years after Robbie Pethick, Alan McLoughlin and Paul Hall netted to ensure the three points stayed at Fratton Park. Despite the win, the Blues remained down the bottom of the table – eventually staying up on the last day of the season, alongside QPR.

1992: Pompey 4 Bristol Rovers 1

Guy Whittingham stole the show by scoring all four goals to sink the Pirates. Despite it only being December, his brace meant he had scored 22 goals in 22 games before going on to finish the season with a total of 47.

1986: Plymouth Argyle 2 Pompey 3

Pompey’s first away win in four months certainly gave fans something to smile about on Boxing Day. The three points here was enough to send them top of the division two table and eventually contributed to their promotion at the end of the season.

1983: Pompey 4 Charlton Athletic 0

A 4-0 win at home to Charlton was just the start of a successful Christmas period for Pompey as they went on to earn a 2-2 draw at Chelsea on December 27. In the 1980s, it was not uncommon to have back-to-back fixtures and in 1983, four points from a possible six proved to be a great present for Blues fans.

1978: Wimbledon 2 Pompey 4

There were also two great results in the Christmas period of 1978, as Pompey comfortably saw off a pair of their fourth division promotion rivals. Reading were the victims on December 23, losing 4-0 at Fratton Park, while the Blues hit the same number past Wimbledon on Boxing Day in a match that ended 4-2 and shattered the Dons’ unbeaten home record.

1950: Chelsea 1 Pompey 4

Our picture shows the Fratton end on Christmas Day, when the Blues lost 3-1 to Chelsea. However, they only had to wait 24 hours to get their revenge. Boxing Day in 1950 saw Pompey travel to Stamford Bridge and record a 4-1 win. They ended the season in seventh position in the division one table – 13 places higher than Chelsea.

1939: QPR 2 Pompey 5

A thrilling encounter saw Pompey knock five past QPR in a victory that sent them second in the top-flight table. The Blues had already enjoyed a fantastic year after winning the FA Cup for the first time in May, something fans were still cheering about as 1940 approached.

1926: Nottingham Forest 0 Pompey 1

There was no Boxing Day fixture in 1926 but the cartoon summarises Pompey’s form at the time. A draw on Christmas Day and victory over Forest on December 27 were just two results that contributed to a second place finish, which saw the Blues promoted to division one in May.
