Portsmouth boss Kenny Jackett gives his reaction to Brandon Haunstrup leaving for Scottish side Kilmarnock

But the Pompey boss is adamant he was disappointed the left-back didn’t choose to extend his stay at Fratton Park.

Haunstrup opted to move north of the border to Scottish Premier League side Kilmarnock this summer after his contract came to a close.

The Waterlooville lad was offered a new deal but explained he felt that was to ensure the club received remuneration if he opted to move on - as per training compensation rules.

After finding his playing time limited, it was not a contract the 23-year-old was prepared to accept leading to him departing from the club he came through the ranks at, making 57 first-team appearances.

Haunstrup made his Kilmarnock debut at the weekend as Alex Dyer’s men picked up an excellent 1-1 draw with champions Celtic.

He was introduced as a second-half substitute at Rugby Park after a minor issue kept him out of the opening game of the season, as his side were defeated by Hibs.

Jackett feels circumstances have been against the former Crookhorn College pupil with the likes of Steve Seddon to compete against.

And injury issues created further problems for Haunstrup last year at time when he was picking up regular first-team action.

Jackett said: ‘I was disappointed to see him leave but I understand why.

‘He’s been behind some good left-backs here, with Seddon being the latest one.

‘Also, he’s been a little bit unlucky with injuries at different times.

‘But I do wish him all of the best for the future and I’m sure that Brandon can go up to Scotland, play on a regular basis and do very well for Kilmarnock.

‘There were different times when he was a bit unlucky with injuries but I do wish him all of the best at Kilmarnock.’
