But the Blues boss believes the midfielder still has time to have a big impact on his team’s promotion bid.

McGeehan’s form has been steady rather than spectacularly, after arriving from Championship Barnsley with great fanfare in January.

Jackett feels the 24-year-old has needed time to adjust to the demands of regular football amid his loan side’s frenetic run of games, since arriving from Championship Barnsley until the summer.

But it’s also playing games consistently with nine League One fixtures and a Leasing.com Trophy final scheduled which can aid his form.

Jackett said: ‘He’s played a lot of games in a short space of time.

‘But he can come through it and is a good enough player.

‘For him, he just has to look forward and keep working hard to hit what he considers to be top form.

‘He can also be a good cog in our wheel. Ultimately that’s what we all want - to be an effective unit.

‘I don’t think there’s necessarily excuses to offer.

‘But for Cam he’s a proven player, a player with a bit of everything.

‘So for him to fit in and play to his potential he has to keep working away at it.

‘He can definitely do that (have a big impact).

‘Playing regularly will help him. He’s had six months of frustration.

‘He will want to build on his start and keep improving.’

Jackett feels that McGeehan has shown the kind of attitude in his time at Pompey which convinces him the former Luton man can still be a success.

He added: ‘The other night he was arriving in the box and it was perhaps his timing (which was an issue).

‘But he worked really hard and got a lot of tackles in.

‘He’s got a good mind set.

‘In terms of an all-round midfield player I do think he as little bit of everything.

‘He wants to be at Portsmouth, he’s happy with the move and enjoying the club.

‘Cameron wants to do well for Portsmouth.’
