Portsmouth fans split on best way to achieve promotion

Pompey fans on social media are split on how they would like to see Pompey potentially promoted.

It comes after News columnist Steve Bone said he’d prefer to wait on the Blues securing promotion to the Championship until next season with the full backing of the Fratton faithful.

That was his favoured option rather than the scenario currently facing Kenny Jackett’s side – possible promotion with this term’s remaining games played behind closed doors when matches eventually resume.

To some, that view point makes little sense – the chance of promotion should never be turned down.

For others, though, they can relate to the stance. After all, what’s football without the fans.

Here, we look at some of the arguments put forward on Facebook and Twitter for both scenarios…

Dom Calvert: I’d accept it being played behind closed doors, given the circumstances, providing the games are shown on something like Ifollow.

Not getting to see the football isn’t an option for me.

Cath Absolom: Personally think it will be very disappointing for everyone concerned, not to mention financially disastrous for nearly every professional league club if we're eventually forced to play behind closed doors.

But especially for all the players who may be leaving the club at the end of the season as well, as they obviously won't receive the proper, decent, respectful send off they all really deserve!.

As without all the players & club staff, we'd have no club at all!. But if we're eventually forced to accept it, that's all we can do, I suppose.

Gavin Thomas: Guaranteed promotion behind closed doors, with fans only able to watch via TV, in their own homes. Yes please!

Glenn Murphy: To me it has always been about going up the park to support Pompey.

I first went in 1960, it doesn’t matter to me what league were in, it’s all about watching football.

Warren Hope: Play behind closed doors.

Mick Cuttill: What is football without fans, our fans raise the anti and away teams know it, I fear the outcome played in silence.

Lorraine Wells: I would still want Pompey to get promotion even if it meant not being there!

Steve Pawsey: There is only one point separating 3rd to 8th. Without the crowd backing the team I feel we would miss out on a top six spot.

@Nineteen862: Promotion with no fans... Yes bloody please.

Chris Scott: Wait and play in front of fans.

Dan Walsh: I'm in two minds. Regular football to watch would make lockdown less boring.

But we shouldn't underestimate just how much a packed out Fratton Park can help influence a result.
