Intriguingly, Bankes is the man who took charge of the clash between the sides at Fratton Park in December.

Bankes came in for some criticism after the game from Sunderland boss Jack Ross, who questioned the decision to send off Loovens.

The Merseyside official has operated almost exclusively in the Championship this season, reffing 39 games. He’s booked 161 people in that time and dismissed four players.

Bankes has been a Football League referee since 2014. He will be assisted by Timothy Wood and Graham Kane, with John Brooks the fourth official.
