Club representatives from leagues One and Two took part in a vote this afternoon to decide on proposals that would see third-tier sides operate within a playing budget of £2.5m a season. Fourth-tier outfits would have a £1.5m ceiling imposed.

Pompey fought vehemently against the plans, with chief executive Mark Catlin labelling them as ‘disgraceful’.

The Blues were joined by six others in opposing the plan, while one club abstained.

And that mean’s they must now abide by the decision, which takes immediate effect, whether they agree or not.

Now, many Pompey fans on social media are calling on the PFA to follow up any threat of legal action.

They’re opposed to the salary cap and are disappointed that the league engineered the whole process.

Here’s a selection of the views shared...

@25CThompson: So there's gonna be no talent in League 1 or 2.

Players can earn more in the National League. What's the point.

It'll be impossible to survive in the champ when newly promoted so you'll see the same teams yo-yoing.

Absolute joke.

@MikeBroad55: A very sad day for football. Small clubs CAN make losses big clubs cannot. EFL have let fans down. Shameful.

@jakemeyers2015: Can't imagine the @PFA will take that laying down, reckon this'll rumble on much longer.

@WELLS35: Probably voted for by the same clubs who voted not to finish the league!

Absolutely inept work from @efl yet again when they should be looking at themselves at the fit and proper persons test and how to protect clubs from being taken over by people with insufficient funding!

@wellsa1970: Almost no point in trying to get promoted.

The gap in pay League One to Championship is farcical.

@gurdy01: Time for a breakaway. Let's get talking to some of the Championship clubs

@danwaldren: Absolutely ridiculous. Should have been a cap in relation to clubs income.

League 1 and 2 will now simply be feeder leagues.

@NiPompey: Urgent legal challenge is required.

Bigger League 1 clubs should unite to pay for the very best legal team. Get the challenge in asap!

@IndianaDerman: This is the end of football as we know it. Unless it is linked to turnover as well then it’s a farce.
