Unweighted points-per-game model could await Portsmouth following 'period of reflection and consultation'

The EFL has confirmed League One clubs will undertake a ‘further period of reflection and consultation’ before deciding the next steps for the 2019-20 season.

But in the event of a curtailment to the campaign, it has recommended promotion and relegation to be determined via an unweighted points-per-game model, with play-offs to remain to decide the third promotion place.

All 23 third-tier clubs, including Pompey, held a conference call on Friday morning as they work towards a decision on whether the current campaign will be played to completion.

Reports early in the week suggested clubs were swaying towards ending the season prematurely.

Yet, accompanied by five other clubs – Sunderland, Peterborough, Ipswich, Oxford and Fleetwood – the Blues indicated their desire to see the campaign reach a natural conclusion.

Blues chief executive Mark Catlin told The News after Friday’s proceedings that he remained ‘positive but not confident’ the season could be concluded on the pitch’.

And while, League Two clubs took the decision to call time on matches within their division, the EFL confirmed further League One talks will continue on Monday.

Part of those talks will focus on a framework outlining how leagues which cannot be played to a completion will be decided.

An unweighted points-per-game basis has been forwarded.

That would see the Blues finish fifth in the table – and provide Kenny Jackett's side with a chance to return to the Championship via the recommended play-offs.

Indeed, Pompey would face Oxford, with Fleetwood v Wycombe the other semi-final.

However, the EFL re-emphasised any decision on how to conclude the season is a matter for Clubs to determine.

Referring specifically to the meeting with League One representatives, the EFL statement read: There were varied views shared in League One and it was determined that there would be a further period of reflection and consultation to understand what creative solutions could be implemented.

‘It was acknowledged that the need to find innovative and creative solutions was of paramount importance as was the need for decisions to be taken quickly.’
