Goals either side of half-time for the visitors from Mike Fondop and Joe Powell saw the Blues’ 100-per-cent winning record under their new boss come to an unexpected end.

Substitute Charlie Daniels scored a late header to reduce the deficit – but it was nothing more than a consolation as Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink held on to claim the victory.

Pompey remain in the play-off places despite the defeat.

But the defeat remains a blow with seven games remaining this season.

Here’s how fans on social media reacted to the result…

@ConnorPFC1997: It just wasn’t our day today and we can’t win them all, now it’s time to dust ourselves off and go again. Onwards and Upwards!

Danny Cowley’s Blue and White Army!

@HelenTweeter: That was a reminder that it’s definitely not a given we’ll be in the playoffs.

Lots of teams snapping at our heels.

@pearcy3000: Nice to see a bit of fight in the end just lacked the quality, not the best set of loanees we got in ain’t great but on to the next one.

Pompey stay in the play offs we got a shot.

@LDW1891: Curtis and Close should’ve scored those chances.

Curtis saw his name in lights again and Close just fluffed it. Score those and it’s a win. (Obviously).

@GavH_: Oh well can’t win them all! This possession game is all well and good if we’re winning but so frustrating when we’re not, get it forward stop going sideways.

@jakemeyers2015: You can't win them all. Today just wasn't our day.

Not the end of the world, we go again Tuesday Que Sera.

@isthereanyjam: Keep the faith. Burton did what they had do.

@TheChief657: Couldn’t get through that solid 2 banks of 4 for Burton, a lot of our guys looked a bit tired.

Really missed having a striker up top, Curtis isn’t suited to it.

@themartinfish: That sums up why, even if we make the play-offs, we’re not good enough to go up.

Would hate to watch Burton every week, though,
