An ex-Pompey player’s Hand of God moment failed to fool referee Ross Joyce.

League Two table toppers Cambridge United hosted struggling Southend on Saturday, yet were held to a goalless draw.

The closest they came to breaking the deadlock was through Adam May – and his right hand.

On 40 minutes, a cross from the left was flicked on into the path of the 23-year-old, who inexplicably used his hand to steer the ball into the net.

Thankfully match official Joyce spotted the precise nature of May’s intervention – ruling out the goal and booking the midfielder.

The Pompey Academy graduate has scored twice this season after establishing himself as a regular in Cambridge’s first-team, wracking up 32 appearances.

He has proven to be a shrewd recruit by manager Mark Bonner following his summer Fratton Park release after 30 games.

However, on this occasion, he couldn’t positively influence the scoreline and was substituted in the 66th minute.

The U’s currently lead League Two by four points, ahead of Forest Green Rovers, albeit having played three games more.
