Nonetheless, this date retains Wembley memories, for 12 years ago today Harry Redknapp’s side booked their place in the FA Cup final following a 1-0 semi-final success over West Brom.

Back on April 5, 2008, Kanu grabbed the only goal to ensure Pompey reached their first final for 69 years – where they would encounter Cardiff.

The Nigerian international pounced from close range in the second half after former Blues keeper Dean Kiely have saved Milan Baros’ initial shot.

That was enough to defeat the Championship opposition in front of 83,584 at the home of football.

Kanu was also the goal hero for the FA Cup final, which again finished with a 1-0 success, this time in front of a Wembley crowd of 89,874, which remains a record attendance to this day.

With the current campaign suspended, there is presently no fresh date set for the Leasing.com Trophy fixture to be staged.

Today also marks 122 years since Pompey were formed at 12 High Street, Old Portsmouth, with John Brickwood announced as their first chairman.
