Who Portsmouth boss feels holds cards in pursuit of Rangers' Ross McCrorie, Birmingham's Steve Seddon and other loanees

Kenny Jackett admitted Pompey aren’t in the driving seat when it comes to recruiting loan players as they weigh up a move for Steve Seddon.

And the Blues boss believes there will be particular uncertainty surrounding players on temporary deals amid the suspension to the football season.

But ultimately it’s the parent clubs of contracted players temporarily at Fratton Park who hold the cards over their futures.

That’s the case for three of the four loanees currently at PO4 with Seddon, Ross McCrorie and Cameron McGeehan tied down beyond the summer.

Sean Raggett’s terms come to a close with Norwich, however, as the defender waits to see what lies ahead for him.

Pompey are keen on Seddon after an explosive start to his time at Fratton Park, with the defender himself open to the prospect of a permanent switch from Birmingham.

There’s much that remains to be seen about the direction football takes to the number of contractual issues it faces in the coming months.

Pompey’s loanees, for example, aren’t contracted until June 30 like their own players but to when the season was originally scheduled to close.

Jackett stressed it the outfits those men arrived from who are crucial when negotiating short-term extensions - and any permanent options.

He said: ‘It is (a different situation).

‘We’re looking at when football resumes and then how does it overlaps with our lads out of contract and our loan players.

‘Everybody’s looking at that situation and everybody will be affected to some degree, I would imagine unless there’s a club somewhere with no loan players and nobody out of contract. That would be unusual.

‘So everybody will be affected and have their eyes on the same situation. How they react and come out of that you can only really do at that particular time.

‘If you take the loan players, though, you have to look at the players’ views, their contractual situation and most importantly for the loan players - the view of their parent clubs.’

Jackett knows free agents this summer are in a tricky situation but ultimately feels there will be a will to sort such problems out.

He added: ‘We’ll all be in the same situation, but it also comes down to what the player wants to do as well.

‘Let’s say a player is out of contract past June 30. That will be quite a unique situation.

‘But I’d imagine if that’s someone who’s playing it’s someone you’d want to keep anyway.

‘Hopefully the overlap will work, but anyway we’d all be in the same situation should we get going again.

‘We’d all be happy to see something settle down. Then those problems are there but very much secondary to everything. Right now, we’d be happy to pick our way through those problems across the course of the summer.

‘There’d be quite a lot to do, but they aren’t hurdles Portsmouth or football can’t get over.’
