Awaiting them is a Latics side likely to include popular Blues old boys Jack Whatmough and Tom Naylor – and a host of other imposing new additions as the big-sending home side bid to return to the Championship as soon as possible.
But with the Blues also impressing in the transfer window and Danny Cowley already getting his new-look side to gel as they enjoy an unbeaten start to their league campaign, there’s an opportunity here to put a real marker down against a promotion rival.
Pompey will need to improve on last Saturday’s attacking display at Doncaster – a game which ended in a goalless draw.
If they can get that right, while the defence continues to prove rock solid, then there’s every chance of another enjoyable afternoon at the DW Stadium.
Here’s how we think the Blues could line up as they bid to achieve that and remain unbeaten in the third tier.

9. Right-wing - Marcus Harness
The winger is expected to return after a quad injury ruled him out for Pompey's last game. Reeco Hackett-Fairchild failed to grasp the opportunity presented to him at Doncaster, making Harness a shoe-in for the game against Wigan. His absence, however, highlighted the lack of real depth in the right-wing area.

10. Striker - John Marquis
Marquis has been replaced in all five games he's started this season, which suggests something isn't clicking for the striker. Is likely to get the nod over George Hirst, though, with his experience vital for such an important game. Needs to start scoring, however, on a consistent basis as Cowley continues to look for additional options up top.

11. Left-wing - Ronan Curtis
Has earned praised for his attitude and performance amid ongoing transfer talk. Is yet to get off the mark, though in terms of goals and assists. Now wouldn't be a bad time to start.
