Portsmouth midfielder will reap benefits of Aldershot switchÂ

The midfielder has moved to the Recreation Ground until December 5 in a bid to gain regular first-team minutes. 

May had made only one appearance for Pompey this season before the switch, enjoying a run-out in the Checkatrade Trophy win over Gillingham.

He had also been left out of all the Blues' League One match-day squads, slipping down the central-midfield pecking order following the summer arrivals of Tom Naylor and Ben Thompson.

The academy product made a blistering start on his Shots debut, netting a double in their 2-0 National League victory over Dover.

Jackett reckons May will benefit from the switch to Aldershot.

And the boss hopes it will bolster the 20-year-old's chances of winning a place in Pompey's engine room. 

Jackett said: '˜We've been on quite a good run and the team here is into a pattern.

'˜It's left Adam without much game-time and that's not good for a 20-year-old.

'˜We have Alex Bass (at Torquay) and May both out on loan and they're both playing at a good level.

'˜I'm pleased for him to go to Aldershot.

'˜They are a very good footballing side and he will benefit hugely from the experience and playing on a regular basis.

'˜That will work him towards his goal of ultimately playing in midfield for Portstmouth.'

There was interest in May from League Two clubs before the loan window closed on August 31 but a move failed to materialise.

It meant the former Sutton United loanee had to drop into the non-league game again for regular football.

However, it gives Pompey the opportunity to recall May on 24 hours' notice if required.

Jackett added: '˜With the window closing, it was not possible for him to go out in the Football League.

'˜The other advantage of going out to the National League is there's a 24-hour recall.

'˜For whatever reason, if we get injuries '“ it's not something we will want to do because we will want him to be playing '“ it covers the club.

'˜If you're going to take young players these days there's a certain argument for an under-23s squad.

'˜Similarly, you can put younger players out on loan to the National League and they're playing men's football that's a very good standard.

'˜Ultimately, then they can supplement your squad if you need them to.'
