Portsmouth scouting network is example of behind-the-scenes investmentÂ

That's the verdict of chief executive Mark Catlin, who feels the area will continue to be key for the Blues moving forward. 

Since Kenny Jackett arrived as manager in June 2017, he's ensured as many bases as possible are covered when it comes to recruiting new players.

An example is Phil Boardman's appointment as head of recruitment last year, with his remit to identify potential targets.

Ronan Curtis was signed from League of Ireland side Derry City in June, and has been a revelation since arriving for an undisclosed fee.

Pompey also have Kieran Sadlier on their radar. The winger is a free agent after his Cork City contract expired following their FAI Cup final loss to Dundalk. 

Catlin revealed the Blues' current scouting system has been engineered by Jackett since he succeeded Paul Cook as boss.

And the manager has financially been supported by owner Michael Eisner.

Catlin said: '˜It's something that since Kenny came to the club and the new owners took over that there has been investment going into scouting and making sure we're covered all over.

'˜It's not an exact science in regards to picking players.

'˜Some players you think are going to smash it and don't adapt, while others you might be a little nervous about and do adapt. 

'˜All you can do is try to wave the odds in your favour as much as you can.

'˜I do feel we are doing that now.

'˜Our network has grown and it's an example of the investment that's been going into the club that no-one really sees.

'˜I think it has been crucial this year and will be crucial moving forward.'
