Sara Sinclair got the goal when she netted on two minutes after a quick forward break from the visitors.

She was denied by an excellent save from the Basildon keeper.

Sarah Kempson was in lively form for the hosts and created several chances, as well as going close herself.

But right on half-time Basildon struck a crucial second goal.

Zoe Rushen broke clear and slid her shot into the net off the far post.

To their credit, Pompey came out strongly for the second half.

Katie James, Gemma Hillier and Kempson were all lively, causing lots of problems for the Basildon defence.

On 63 minutes the hosts found a way back into the game.

Quayle beat three Basildon defenders with a powerful run and then finished well to cut the deficit in half.

Charlotte Benson and Shannon Sievwright went close to equalising as Pompey stepped up the pressure.

Hillier then just failed to connect cleanly when well positioned.

It seemed like the equaliser was inevitable.

Kempson saw her free-kick well saved by the Basildon keeper.
