Rams keen to spoil Kings title party

They have got well used to seeing the league winners' silverware being presented at the end of a season at Petersfield Town in recent years.

That could continue at Love Lane tomorrow (3pm) but for once the Rams will have to sit back and watch another team celebrate league success for a change.

In 2014, Petersfield were presented with the Wessex League division one trophy on the final day of the season after they beat United Services Portsmouth to secure the title.

Last season they were celebrating again when a 1-0 victory over Lymington Town meant they were handed the Wessex League’s premier division trophy.

The hat-trick of trophy presentations could well be completed at Love Lane tomorrow – but this time the silverware could be going home with the visitors.

Victory for Kings Langley over Petersfield will guarantee them top spot in the Southern League’s division one central and would see the Hertfordshire side crowned champions.

Rams boss Ian Saunders will be doing his best to stop that happen, though.

And he is trying to rally his troops for their final game of the season when they will be out to end a run of six games without a win.

After defeats to Egham, Aylesbury, Potters Bar Town and Godalming Town and draws with Godalming and Barton Rovers, Saunders is determined to end the campaign on a winning note.

‘It’s one of the worst things about football when you are not winning something to have to watch another team celebrate and parade the trophy around,’ said Saunders.

‘Outwardly you pay the other team compliments and congratulate them but inside you are wishing you are the team lifting that trophy and having the glory.

‘Although we are on a poor run of form we owe it to the other teams going for the title tomorrow to put in a good performance and do everything we can to win the match.

‘It’s been a long season and that has caught up with us in some of our recent performances.

‘But we need to gather ourselves one more time and do everything we can to go into the close season with a victory under our belts.

‘That will be a tough ask as we have a few people missing for this game.

‘Others are also carrying knocks but it is just one more 90 minutes of effort and then we can enjoy plenty of beers at our presentation night and then a well-earned rest.’
