Rams look to find goal touch against Greenford

And despite the defeat at Gosport Borough in the Portsmouth Senior Cup on Monday night ending all serious hopes of securing some silverware this season, the Rams still have plenty to aim for in the closing weeks of the season.

Victory against Southern League division one central’s bottom side on Saturday would almost mathematically see Petersfield safe from relegation – they are currently 17 points clear of the drop zone.

However, Ian Saunders’ side have their sights set on more than just survival in their first season of step four football.

And their hectic fixture schedule over the next week and a half will go a long way to determining whether they can break into the top half of the table.

Northwood are the visitors to Love Lane on Wednesday, then the Rams face Aylesbury at home next Saturday, they have a trip to Godalming Town on Easter Monday and then Hanwell Town visit them two days later.

The Rams’ highest league position so far this season has been 13th place.

But if they can win their games in hand they will better that and set themselves up for a top half of the table finish to the season.

Manager Saunders said: ‘Although we are now out of all the cup competitions and realistically we are not going to make the play-offs, there is still a lot to play for this season.

‘We have had some disappointing results in recent weeks.

‘The goals have dried up for us so we need to find that goalscoring touch again as soon as we can.

‘It is a hectic run of matches coming up.

‘And it will be tough on everyone to play so many games in such a short period.

‘But now the bad weather seems to have stopped we can concentrate on playing every weekend and midweek now and catch up on our games in hand.

‘League wise this season I think we have performed better than the current position we find ourselves in.

‘But we now need to put in the shifts to get us to where we think we should be.’

Although he was stretchered off against Gosport with what looked like a nasty leg injury, Lewis Hyde is expected to be available for selection tomorrow, as is Andy Todd.

He is back after playing for the Royal Navy.
