And the Blues boss confessed other sides’ spoiling tactics have shocked him as the hosts were made to work hard by a stubborn U’s outfit intent on playing purely on the counter-attack.

As it was, Gary Roberts was the man to break the visitors down as he netted a late double – the first a penalty – to move Pompey up six places to 14th position in the table.

Cook said: ‘I must admit I am relieved – it has been a long week, obviously, after losing at Morecambe.

‘The disappointing thing, and I don’t mind saying it, is that it has shocked me the way teams are setting up.

‘It really has shocked me.

‘We have to look at changing, we must look at changing when playing at home.

‘With all due respect to supporters, my job will always be on the line with results.

‘I am like them – I want to win and teams just come to frustrate us, that is the reality of it.

‘I can guarantee supporters I won’t just sit back at home and allow it to happen.’
