Revealed: Pompey's record with and without Pitman

Pompey's win record is better with Brett Pitman not in the team.

But the stats prove Kenny Jackett's men depend heavily on their top scorer's goals.

The Blues travel to Fleetwood in League One tonight without their leading marksman this season.

Pitman has 15 goals to his name this term, with 14 coming in the league.

Yet he won't be involved in the Highbury Stadium clash after picking up a hamstring injury in Saturday's defeat to Southend.

The injury threatens to keep him out of action for up to three weeks, which represents a blow to Pompey's play-off hopes.

However, the Blues have shown they can cope in his absence, with a win percentage of 60 per cent in League One without their skipper.

Pitman has missed five of the Blues' 33 game league games to date this term.

In that time Jackett's side enjoyed victories against Gillingham (A), MK Dons (H) and Plymouth (H), losing to Doncaster (A) and Peterborough (A).

But in the 25 league games the former Ipswich man has started, Pompey's win percentage drops to 44 per cent - and declines further to 39 per cent when considering the three games he has appeared as a substitute.

Such statistics will give the travelling Fratton faithful something to cling on to as the Blues head to Fleetwood tonight in search of only a second win of 2018.

But when it comes to Pitman's goal contribution, no-one else compares.

The club captain has scored 14 of Pompey's 40 league goals to date.

That represents 35 per cent of the Blues' overall total, with team-mates Oli Hawkins (15 per cent) and Conor Chaplin (12.5 per cent) some way behind with six and five goals respectively.

And if Jackett wants more of his Pompey squad to chip in on the goals front, likely candidates Jamal Lowe (three goals - 7.5 per cent) and Kal Naismith (one goal - 2.5 per cent) have a lot to live up to.

The Blues' goals-per-game ratio is therefore understandably greater with Pitman in the team.

In his 25 starts, Pompey have netted on 32 occasions - a strike rate of 1.28 goals per game.

But take the striker out of the squad altogether and that drops to one goal per match.

And by taking his goals out of the side, an even greater shortfall is identified.

Pitman has scored in 10 league games for the Fratton Park outfit this season.

The Blues' record from those fixtures reads: W7 D2 L1, which gives Jackett's side a win percentage of 70 per cent.

But when the forward fails to net - a situation that has arisen 18 times in the league this term - that figure drops to 22 per cent.

The only alarm bell when it comes to Pitman's goals is the lack of them since the turn of the year.

Prior to the start of 2018, the striker had netted 13 goals in 32 appearances, a figure that was 41 per cent of Pompey's league total of 32.

But with only one in this calendar year, he's contributed just 12.5 per cent of the Blues' goals - a drop of 28.5 per cent.

The Blues' goals-per-game ratio has also dropped in this period, from 1.28 a match to a lowly one per outing.

In fact, Jackett's side have only scored eight goals in the league in 2018, producing a current win percentage of 12.5 per cent compared to 52 per cent before the turn of the year.

That will need to improve significantly, with Chaplin Pompey's leading scorer this year with two goals.
