Richardson: Fitness more important than Pompey victory

Leam Richardson shrugged off the importance of Pompey's opening pre-season win and insisted focus remains fitness.

Pompey secured a 2-0 victory at Bohemians this afternoon, with Danny Rose and Conor Chaplin netting in the first-half.

It follows a 3-3 draw at Sligo earlier in the week which kicked off the summer friendly programme.

Paul Cook’s troops will tomorrow return to England at the end of their week-long Irish tour.

And Richardson is delighted with the progress being made in the team’s preparation for the campaign ahead.

Pompey’s assistant manager said: ‘We are relatively pleased with the week, the lads have applied themselves and we have had a good training week and finished with two games.

‘The lads have worked hard, no two-ways about it, they had a really tough day yesterday before the game and it’s great they still had energy to be honest.

‘It’s never about results pre-season, it’s about young lads getting to know each other, getting habits back and putting habits into the new players coming in.

‘It’s not about result but habits, relationships, distances on the pitch and overall fitness.’
