Richardson waits on FA - but Evans gets Pompey ban

And Gareth Evans has been given a three-match ban following his dismissal.

Pompey won 3-1 at the Abbey Stadium on Saturday to maintain their bright start to the season.

However, the fixture was marred by a number of controversial incidents.

At the centre was Richardson, who clashed with Mark Roberts following the half-time whistle.

Now referee Seb Stockbridge has sent an extraordinary incident report into the FA in which Richardson is mentioned.

This will be assessed before a decision is made whether to take any further action against Richardson.

Such an outcome could be known tomorrow.

On the day, tempers were already high among Pompey’s management and players after Robbie Simpson’s offside goal was allowed to stand.

Replays later proved it an incorrect call, while Cook himself was spoken to by the referee just before half time.

Richardson then entered the pitch at the break to apparently keep players away from the match officials, only for Cambridge’s Roberts to react.

The U’s skipper laid his hands on Pompey’s assistant manager, who then retaliated. Roberts next sent Aaron McCarey tumbling to the floor.

During the interval, Roberts was given a red card, reducing his side to 10-men, as Pompey fought back to run out 3-1 winners.

The ex-Accrington Stanley player will now serve a three-match ban for violent conduct.

Richardson was sent to the stands for the second half, although was subsequently also removed from the gantry and moved by police elsewhere.

Punishment for Richardson now reverts to the FA as it is beyond referee Stockbridge’s jurisdiction.

They must then decide whether to charge him and, if so, Richardson will be invited to respond. Depending on that outcome, it could well go to an FA hearing.

In addition, there is the potential for the FA to charge both clubs on their failure to control players or officials.

Evans was sent off in stoppage time following a challenge on Cambridge right-back Elliot Omozusi.

That was deemed serious foul play, attracting a three-match ban.

He now misses Newport County, Stevenage and Mansfield.
