The former West Ham forward has been playing an important role for the team as she looks to establish herself as a key member of the starting line-up.

Recently the Blues saw top goalscorer Ini Umotong make the move to join FA Women’s Super League second division side Oxford.

That has opened up a bigger opportunity for other forwards looking to impress manager Northeast.

Sherwood is one of those and her recent contributions to the team’s excellent winning form have helped stake her claim.

She has scored three goals in the Hampshire Cup in 2016 to help Pompey Ladies progress to the final where they will meet Basingstoke on April 13.

Her approach work and link-up play has also been a big factor in the good run of form in the league.

Pompey have won five of their past six league matches and been scoring for fun in the process.

Northeast said: ‘Emma has got good quality on the ball.

‘Her fantastic touch and vision makes her stand out as a player.

‘She is a proven goalscorer and with us she is that and more.

‘Emma will have a great future with us. She is one to watch out for.’

Northeast’s side were not in action last weekend.

They haven’t played since the 5-1 win against West Ham on Sunday, March 6.

It will be a welcome return to action when they travel to Forest Green Rovers on Sunday.

Pompey are fifth in the table with 11 wins from 17 matches.

Forest Green are 11th, having managed only two wins from 18 games.

Last Sunday they lost 6-0 at home to Lewes and they will be hoping to ensure there is no repeat of that against Pompey.

They are now five points behind leaders Brighton with only one game in hand.

Coventry have 35 points, the same as Pompey, 10 adrift of Brighton, with two games in hand.

Meanwhile, Rebecca Bell led the way with four goals as Pompey Ladies’ development squad extended their fine form to 13 matches unbeaten.
