So was it the best Pompey goal ever?

Okay, so it wasn’t 48 consecutive passes but the passage of play which culminated in the opening goal against Bournemouth has its place in Pompey folklore assured.

But was it the best? Does the 2min 25sec of footballing heaven served up against Bournemouth set a new high for quality?

There is a long and memorable line of worldies to better, if that’s the case.

Glen Johnson v Hull November 22, 2008

Pretty impressive going to score the goal of the season on your weaker foot. That’s what Johnson did with his thunderous dipping volley from 30 yards against Hull. A popular choice.

Kevin Dillon v Blackburn January 9, 1988

Dillon had just had an argument with Alan Ball at the interval and later joked he pictured his face on the ball. The result was a famous 40-yard FA Cup volley.

Patrik Berger v Charlton August 21, 2004

Andre D’Alessandro served up a pretty special goal against Charlton, but Berger betters it with a smash from 35 yards on the turn which dips viciously and beats Dean Kiely.

Pedro Mendes v Manchester City March 11, 2006

Needs no introduction. Sparking the Great Escape in stoppage time and doing so with a hit of sublime quality to beat then City keeper David James in front of the Fratton End.

Matt Taylor v Sunderland December 9, 2006

Could easily have been the hit into the heavens at Sunderland but Taylor rates the strike at Everton as better, and joined the debate on Twitter, along with Gary O’Neil and Richard Hughes, to confirm that was the case.

A loose Taylor touch and deflection off Kanu saw the ball sit up and the ball hit with purity from fully 45 yards, to leave Tim Howard grasping at fresh air.

Guy Whittingham v Bristol Rovers 1992

Previously set the bar for passing Pompey goals as Paul Walsh and Guy Whittingham carve through the Bristol Rovers side with their one-twos before Whittingham nets.

Noe Pamarot v Newcastle November 3, 2007

Has anyone ever seen a ball hit harder for a Pompey goal? They called legend Duggie Reid ‘Thunderboots’. Pamarot became a modern-day equivalent with this 30-yard piledriver at St James Park in 2007.

Phil Ashworth v Bradford 1979 October 20, 1979

Frank Burrows proclaims the goal ‘real Roy of the Rovers stuff.’. @Freddie217 prefers to call the swivel shot ‘the best goal in the whole history of football. Ever’. Fair enough.

David Norris v Southampton April 7, 2012

Southampton fans are dancing on the pitch as Billy Sharp puts his side 2-1 up in the 89th minute.

That adds to the stoppage time as David Norris takes aim and cracks a wondrous 20-yard volley past the flailing Kelvin Davies.

Cue pandemonium – and a very funny YouTube clip of the incident from the adjoining Southampton fans’ perspective. Just look it up...

Peter Crouch v Stoke October 5, 2008

Often overlooked, but Crouch’s effort against Stoke was a textbook example of the overhead/bicycle kick.

Jermain Defoe pitches the ball up and Crouch uses every inch of his 6ft 7in frame to acrobatically fire home.

Patrick Agyemang at Oxford (2013), Kevin O’Callaghan at Huddersfield (1985), John Utaka against Bolton (2007) and Chris Maguire against Southampton (2012) were just a few to be mentioned in Twitter dispatches.
