Kenny Jackett's young side served up a wretched performance as they came up well short against the Tangerines on a bleak afternoon at Fratton Park.

Poor defending led to a goal in each half in front of a crowd of 17,895, with the majority left frustrated by what they witnessed.

Christian Burgess was caught in possession to allow Kyle Vassell to open the scoring in the 41st minute.

Clark Robertson doubled his side's lead with 29 minutes left, after being left totally unmarked to head home in the six-yard box.

The huge swathes of empty seats long before the final whistle summed up the apathy of the Pompey fans.

The opening was low on quality, with both sides unable to put any cohesive passes together.

Vassell had a good sight of goal after 11 minutes but dragged his shot wide when well placed eight yards out.

Then oLI Hawkins couldn't direct two quick-fire shots on target at the back post from dangerous Jamal Lowe crosses.

The striker pulled one cross-shot wide after 24 minutes, and seven minutes later fired a gilt-edged chance wide from 10 yards after Burgess headed back across goal.

Then came Burgess dallying on the ball four minutes before the break, allowing Vassell to advance and finish with aplomb with a low drive.

The second half continued in the same vein as the first, but Lowe did have a sight of goal after 61 minutes yet fired wide across goal from 12 yards.

Pompey were punished for poor marking at the back two minutes later, as Robertson was left all on his own to plant Jay Spearing's cross past the exposed Luke McGee from six yards.

The home side rarely looked like pulling a goal back on an afternoon to quickly forget, with an exodus of home fans long before the full-time whistle.
