The peripatetic 30-year-old striker has been on trial at Privett Park in recent weeks, scoring the winner in a friendly against Hawks.

Now the 6ft 2in target man has agreed a deal with Boro ahead of the club’s Southern League Premier South curtain-raiser at Chesham this weekend.

Gosport will be the 17th club the Ghana international has played for since starting his career at Barnet in 2008.

His best spell came at Eastbourne Borough in the 2012/13 Conference South campaign, when he netted 11 times for the Sussex club.

Boro boss Shaun Gale has signed the player before, during his time as Hawks boss.

Gale brought Charles to Westleigh Park in the 2009/10 campaign, having seen the forward score against the Hawks on his Lewes loan debut the previous season.

Gale said: ‘I’m delighted to sign him. He’s been on my radar for some time.

‘Elliott gives us a different dimension up front. He can be a focal point for us and allow the likes of Matt Paterson and Dan Wooden to play off him.

‘He showed what he brings to us in the recent friendlies. He is also a goalscorer, he scored the winner against Hawks for instance, so he brings a bit of everything to our attacking game.’

Gale has also completed the one month loan signings of Pompey pair Gerard Storey and Eoin Teggart, a midfielder and winger respectively.

The two Blues scholars have both featured already in Boro’s pre-season programme.

Former Pompey defender Gale said: ‘We’re delighted to give them an opportunity. Storey is a good passer and has already gained a bit of experience in men’s football, while Teggart is quick and direct, with a great delivery.

‘We are looking to build our relationship with Pompey, as both sides can see there is the potential there for Gosport to help to bring their young professionals through, while giving our club access to quality players.’
