The HPL Senior Division table-toppers started a run of two cup matches in five days by beating Braishfield 3-1 in a Southampton Intermediate Cup quarter final on Mountbatten School’s 3G pitch.

The tie gave Thompson the chance to give squad players some much-needed minutes - Infinity have only played two league games since January 8.

Kurt Watts started, following a spell out through injury, and others were drafted in to the starting XI.

‘As you can imagine, it wasn’t the best of games to watch given the conditions,' said Thompson.

‘The most important thing was that we progressed to the semi-finals.

‘We made a couple of changes to give people some minutes that were coming back from injury.

‘Kurt got his first start after being out for two or three months and he got the first goal.

‘It was pleasing for Kurt to get on the scoresheet.

‘It breeds confidence within the squad.

‘It gave us an opportunity to give some lads some minutes that haven’t really played that much.

‘It’s made my job difficult with the lads coming in and doing so well.'

Watts opened the scoring on 23 minutes and Callum Parker doubled the advantage five minutes after the restart.

Braishfield pulled a goal back after 55 minutes but Jamie White weighed in with his 39th goal of the season late on to see Infinity through to the last four and in with a chance of retaining the silverware.

Colden Common have lost their last three matches, conceding 10 goals in the process.

But Thompson is taking nothing for granted as Infinity also aim to retain the HPL Cup they won last season.

‘If you look back at the past few results, they haven’t been brilliant,' he said.

‘But they’re a tough, decent side. They’ve got some decent players.

‘Sam Adams is a very good striker who has scored 30-odd goals this season.

‘We know it’s going to be a really tough game.'
