The midfielder has so far missed pre-season training through commitments with Gibraltar.

Walker was then due to travel back to the south coast ready to link up with Guy Whittingham’s squad for the first time tomorrow.

The 25-year-old has been invited back to the Blues in a bid to win a new contract.

He made 28 appearances last season, scoring two goals and winning himself plenty of admirers among the Fratton faithful in the process.

But Whittingham wants to see an improvement in his all-round game if he is to be offered a deal.

And it will now be up to Walker to extend his Pompey stay for a minimum of a season.

Whittingham said: ‘Liam is coming back in tomorrow so we’ll see how he is.

‘He’s been on duty with Gibraltar in the meantime, so we will evaluate him fitness-wise.

‘At this moment I do not know whether he will be okay to play against the Hawks on Tuesday.

‘It’s a case of assessing the situation closer to the time and taking it from there.

‘We will have a look at him in pre-season and see how he goes.’

Walker will have missed the first four days of pre-season training by the time he returns to Fratton Park.

But he will be back in time to be in contention for the friendlies, which start against the Hawks at Westleigh Park on Tuesday night.
