Will there be a record number of non-league clubs in this season’s FA Cup third round?

There will be at least three non-league clubs taking their place in next Monday’s draw for the third round of the FA Cup.

The winners of the Marine v Hawks, Canvey Island v Boreham Wood and Stockport County v Yeovil Town ties will all have the chance of being drawn against one of English football’s elite when the draw is made next Monday.

Only two non-league clubs have won through to the third round proper stage in the last two seasons, and in 2017/18 there were none at all.

That followed the 2016/17 season when five reached that stage. Of those, Sutton United - managed by current Hawks boss Paul Doswell - went onto the fifth round and Lincoln City became the first non-league club to reach the quarter-finals for 103 years.

The record number of non-league clubs in the third round is eight, a figure recorded in 2008/09 (click on graphic for the names of the clubs).

That beat the previous record of six established in 1977/78, the season when Blyth Spartans reached the fifth round.

Of the 14 non-league clubs left in this season’s tournament, half are from the National League and half are from divisions below.

Hawks and Oxford City are flying the National League South flag, while Darlington, Chorley and Brackley are from the National League North.

Marine (Northern Premier League North West) and Canvey Island (Isthmian League South East) ply their trade in the eighth tier of English football.

Hawks were the last club from the sixth tier to reach the fourth round of the FA Cup, in 2007/08, while Chasetown remain the only eighth tier club to reach the third round, also in 2007/08.
