Roberts stepped up to grab the leveller in a 1-1 draw on a bitter-sweet afternoon for Paul Cook’s men.

A largely lacklustre match sprang to live with 15 minutes left as Francois Zoko - a regular tormentor of the Blues - scrambled home a corner.

Burgess was then sent off for two yellow cards in two minutes - the first of which was for a needless off the ball clash with Zoko.

The defender then walked when he brought down Ryan Dickson outside the box.

It was nightmare for Pompey, but Roberts stepped up with five minutes remaining with a lovely left-footed finish inside the box,

Yeovil had the better of the opening exchanges but Pompey were having their moments of threat.

Kyle Bennett had a third-minute shot blocked before Matt Dolan smashed a shot across the face of goal.

Tahvon Campbell then also had a shot blocked before a peach of a pass from Gary Roberts got Michael Smith away - but he blazed over from a tight angle.

Bennett then volleyed wide from a dangerous Smith cross after 15 minutes.

That was followed up with a 20 yarder which whistled just wide from the lively Pompey man.

Campbell then spun Davies and clipped a shot over the advancing Ryan Fulton, but just wide of the post.

The best chance of an even half came to Liam Walsh seven minutes before the break.

The winger’s shot was going just wide until it hit Christian Burgess. That saw the ball heading towards the net before Burgess recovered to clear.

Pompey were then forced into a change as Ben Tollitt replaced the injured Gareth Evans.

The match was looking for one of the sides grab it by the scruff of the neck after the break.

And Pompey’s energy levels definitely went up after the break.

Tollitt put through Roberts for the best chance of the match after 51 minutes, but Artur Krysiak clawed out his low drive.

Then the lively Tollitt teed up Close who cracked a shot just wide from 30 yards.

Pompey were indebted to Fulton for a fine Schmeichel-esque stop after 58 minutes, as he denied Zoko a certain goal with a sprawling save.

The afternoon fell apart for Pompey in dramatic fashion with 15 minutes left, though.

Yeovil took the lead from a scramble following a corner as Zoko stabbed the ball home.

Then Burgess was dismissed for two quickfire yellows in two minutes.

First he stupidly got involved off the ball with Zoko and was given a yellow before being dismissed for a foul on Dickson on the edge of the box.

But against the odds, Pompey levelled with five minutes left as Roberts produced a lovely left-footed from inside the box.

No side could add to the goals through four minutes of stoppage time to leave Pompey seventh in the table.
