Youngster's loving being a key part at Pompey

And the Blues starlet insists he’s learning at an accelerated rate after he got his second 90 minutes under his belt for the club during last night’s success at Yeovil.

Webster shone with a composed display in the 2-1 win at Huish Park.

The 17-year-old also showed his versatility as he switched to left-back after impressing on the right flank against Scunthorpe on Saturday.

And the West Wittering talent got forward on plenty of occasions and showed he isn’t being overawed by the move into senior football.

Webster said: ‘I’m loving it.

‘This time last year I was in the youth team, so it’s amazing.

‘I’m loving left-back and loving right-back. It’s developing me as a player massively.

‘I get the chance to get forward.

‘Left-back is no problem. Sometimes I think my left foot is better than my right.

‘The other defenders are always talking and Jon Harley was there and knows what to do.

‘When I played right-back on Saturday, Muzzy (Dumbuya) was there, so that helps me.

‘We’ve got a lot of experience in our team.

‘I love bombing forward. I can do that from that position and show what I can do.

‘I’ve started the past two games and it’s so different to coming on.

‘I feel I’m learning so much about myself as a player all the time.’

Webster revealed Pompey’s plan at Yeovil was to start on the front foot and test the confidence of a Glovers side who had lost five games on the bounce going into last night’s game.

He felt his team were always likely to pick up three points as they carved out a host of chances against Gary Johnson’s side.

Webster said: ‘We knew they might not be very confident at the minute

‘So we used that to our advantage.

‘The work is starting to pay off now. We have been working extra hard.

‘We had a lot of chances and, perhaps, should have taken them earlier to kill the game off.

‘We were unlucky in the first half. They came back into it in the second-half but I was always confident we would do it.

‘They had their spells but we rode it out.

‘We stuck in there and got a deserved win.’

It’s been a period to savour for Webster, with Pompey starts arriving along with England under-19 recognition.

He couldn’t join up with the young Three Lions, though, with his presence needed in the Blues’ threadbare squad.

Webster understood the reasons for that, although he admits the call from his country has boosted his morale.

Webster said: ‘There’s mixed emotions.

‘I want to play for my country but I’m needed here.

‘All the time I’m needed here and we are winning, I’m happy.

‘It’s definitely adding to my confidence.’
