Gearing up for start of Lakeside 5k Series

THE first race of the Lakeside 5k Series takes place tonight (7.15pm).

It is a fast, flat course around Lakeside, North Harbour, Western Road.

The race registration takes place at Hilsea Lido, PR2 9RP.

Last summer the event was hotly contested with Chichester duo Peter Concannon and James Baker battling it out for glory.

Between them they won all five of the races.

Concannon sealed the series title with victory in the finale.

Baker had to be content with second spot in the overall standings after winning two races and finishing runner-up three times.

Eastleigh’s Tom Stevens was third senior male and he has shown he is in excellent form with a flying leg to lead his club to glory in the Lakeside Road Relays recently.

Aldershot, Farnham & District athlete Lauren Hall took the ladies’ series title with three wins from the three races she entered.

Second was Eastleigh’s Hannah Howard, with City of Portsmouth youngster Elizabeth Rose third senior lady and first under-17.

City also had series category wins for Adam Kimber (under-15 boys), Martin Williams (male veteran 55), Reg Ball (male veteran 60), Phoebe Carlile (under-15 girls) and Jo Payze (female veteran 40).

Jo Gilholm, of Havant-based club Victory, won the female veteran 45 age category, while Chichester duo Jane Harrop (female veteran 50) and Sue Baker (female veteran 60) were also winners.

Entries will be taken between 6pm and 7pm tonight.

The second race of the series is on Wednesday, May 25, with event number three on Wednesday, June 29.

Race four takes place on Wednesday, July 27.

Then the series, jointly hosted by City of Portsmouth and Havant, finishes with the fifth and final run on Wednesday, August 24.
