GERRY NORTH proved he’s still the man to beat when it comes to sporting service last night.
The 75-year-old was rewarded for a lifetime of magnificent service to athletics when he was handed the Lifetime Achievement honour at The News 2011 Sports Awards.
And in a double boost, North saw his City of Portsmouth talent Cassie Thorp named Sportswoman of the Year after a memorable debut season in the sport.
North was thrilled to receive his award at Fratton Park last night but admitted: ‘It’s a total surprise. I really wasn’t expecting this.
‘I’m delighted to be given such an honour.
‘It’s great to see Cassie win, too. She definitely deserves it and it’s a night to remember for us.’
North and Thorp were two of many local sporting heroes hailed last night as a large number of Pompey stars were in attendance to help toast our grass-roots scene.
