On Friday night a music set by 2manydjs drew a young crowd to the Downs – while Sunday saw families out in force for an afternoon of racing complemented by events aimed at showing race-goers what makes a meeting tick.

Both were successful and have set Goodwood up nicely for the remaining two Friday-night racing-and-music evenings, which will be their last fixtures before the first Qatar Goodwood Festival – aka Glorious – at the end of July.

Three Friday Nights continues tomorrow (June 12) when Gorgon City will be performing a DJ set after evening racing. The series comes to a close on Friday, June 19, with Idris Elba taking to the decks following a six-race card.

Tickets for both fixtures are very close to selling out, but there is still very limited availability so book now to avoid disappointment.

There is also limited availability for some of Goodwood hospitality packages. Please contact the hospitality team on 01243 755054 to make a booking.

Racecourse MD Adam Waterworth was delighted with the success of the first Friday night and the Sunday School afternoon that followed less than 48 hours later.

He said: “We were very lucky with the weather both on Friday – when it was beautiful despite other parts of the country had suffered thunder-storms – and on Sunday.

“Our Sunday School fixture, now in its second year, is working really well. There were lots of families, lots of kids – the fun-fair was busy all day and there was great interest in visits to the weighing room and Seamus Buckley’s walks out on to the course, so much so we may have to add some extra slots next year.

“Friday night was a little quieter – there is always one of the three that is – but was a big success with some excellent racing and music topped off with a fireworks finale.”

Waterworth was pleased to see the meetings throw up wins and fine runs from a number of horses who are now set to appear at Royal Ascot next week and back at Glorious, the Qatar Goodwood Festival, at the end of July.

Gavlar won Sunday’s Shine Voice & Data Stakes for Angmering trainer William Knight after second and third places at Goodwood earlier in the season and is now set for the two-and-a-half mile contest that starts day two of Glorious.

Meanwhile, two of Friday night’s two-year-old winners, Richard Hannon’s War Whisper and Godolphin’s Strong Challenge, can also be marked down as ones for Goodwood race-goers to follow over the season.

Tomorrow, racing begins at 6pm with the highlights of the six-race schedule the class-three Sir Eric Parker Memorial Stakes at 7pm and the Frankie’s 28th Anniversary Maiden Stakes, honouring the anniversary of Dettori’s first win in this country, which came at Goodwood in 1987.
