IT WAS first blood to the Gosport and Fareham Snooker League after they beat Portsmouth on their own turf in the inter town competition.
The best players from the two towns made the journey across the water to the Craneswater club in Southsea on Saturday night.
And they couldn't have hoped for a better result.
Four wins helped them secure a 10-8 victory over the Pompey boys, putting them in a good position for the second leg which takes place at Stoke Snooker Club in Gosport on Saturday night.
Gosport captain Paul Foster said: 'It was a good victory. Pompey are a good side but we proved we have got some great players as well. Getting a win over there was vital.
'Although there's still a long way to go this has given us a great opportunity to win.'
Gosport got off to a solid start on the night with Dave Coombs knocking in breaks of 47 and 48 in his 2-1 victory over Scott Compton.
Mick Jurd also clinched a 2-1 win over Dave Lawrence - winning one of his frames without potting a ball.
Lawrence, who had notched a 51 break to win the first frame, had potted a long red at the start of the second but the white ball ended up sitting awkwardly at the bottom of the pack.
Three times he tried to hit the black ball but failed to do so, meaning the frame was conceded.
The next two matches saw two outright winners.
Pompey's Simon Munday made a 61 break - the highest of the evening - in his 3-0 win over Paul West. While Paul Foster ground out a 3-0 win over Danny Auld.
England player Colin Norton made two 40-plus breaks as he took a 2-0 lead over Gosport's Richie Hickman. But Hickman hit back with a 46 to secure the last frame.
Steve Davis won a hard fought match 2-1 against Portsmouth's Dave Hume.
The second leg starts at 7.30pm on Saturday night. All are welcome to watch.
First to 19 frames wins.
