And the British champion admits he has learned some of the biggest lessons of his career over the past six weeks.

Gregory goes into the competition, which begins today, fresh from a maiden appearance in The Open at Troon, a debut in the European Amateur Team Championships and a first Great Britain & Ireland cap in the St Andrew’s Trophy.

He said: ‘The Open and St Andrews Trophy both proved to me I am able to play golf at a higher level.

‘I’m close to being good enough to compete with the best – but there are areas that need improving.

‘And I learned no matter how fit you are, how good you feel, the golf catches up with you eventually.

‘So scheduling is now key. I will be looking at what to play in and what to avoid to be best prepared for anything I play in over the next eight months.

‘That is why I missed the European Amateur Championship this month, as I needed a break before flying to the States.

‘Obviously, I still have to receive the official invite to play in the Masters.

‘But that is what I am working towards from now on and then the US Open at Erin Hills in June.’

Gregory has also revealed Cobra handed him the same five-wood used by Rickie Fowler after a visit to their tour truck at Troon.

The Corhampton player, who normally has a two-iron, a rescue and four wedges in his bag, rarely carries a five-wood.

He said: ‘Cobra’s pro tour services manager Ben Schomin suggested Rickie’s five-wood would be perfect for hitting the ball out of the rough at Oakland Hills.

‘They measured me up for the Baffler Rail club and fitted it for me there and then.

‘I’ve tested it and can hit it from the rough easily, which could be huge if I get out of position and miss a fairway.

‘Looking at the course, it should suit my game as I drive it well and if I can hit it on the short stuff, I am sure I can play some nice golf.’
