The principal idea is to bridge the gap for young talented, players who have the potential to get into the academy once they are 16.

Caldera, who also plays for Portsmouth Grammar School’s first XI, is a batting all-rounder, recently putting in a strong performance for the school in the semi-finals of the under-15 national twenty20 finals at Arundel.

“There has been extremely positive feedback from Hampshire about Ben and his potential to become a professional cricketer in the future,” says Sam Lavery, cricket pro at Portsmouth Grammar School.

“We are really proud he will be representing the school at this level and will be supporting him all the way.”

He will be joined on the emerging players programme by Andrew Gorvin, 15, of Havant Cricket Club.
