Havant ladies’ firsts suffered a 3-0 defeat at Southgate in their opening South Clubs Women’s League division one clash.
Fielding seven new players, the visitors started nervously and went a goal behind early on.
A superb performance between the posts from player-of-the-match Mel Install ensured the London side did not extend their advantage before the break.
Skipper Kim Tyrell marshalled the Havant defence well, while Katie Pugh and Holly Firkins attempted to inspire a fightback. But the visitors could not break down their hosts and Southgate ran in two further goals in the last 10 minutes to put a gloss on the performance.
Tyrell was not despondent with the result, though.
‘The score was not a fair reflection on the game,’ she said. ‘There were lots of positives but also lots of things we can work on at training over the coming weeks.’
Havant host Hampstead & Westminster at Havant College this weekend (1.30pm).
Hampstead & Westminster were denied promotion when Havant beat them in the penultimate game of last season.
