Rebecca van Berkel has helped England under-21s to third place in the Volvo EuroHockey Championships in Den Bosch, Holland.

The tournament was played towards the end of August and involved all the European heavyweights.

Van Berkel started August outside of tournament action, however, making an appearance against Belgium in the first of a three-match series.

Her side recorded a 1-0 victory thanks to a Sarah Haycroft goal just before half-time.

After impressing there, the former Havant youngster was rewarded with a starting role in the third game in which England stormed past Belgium 6-1.

Lily Owsley cancelled out an early Belgium lead in Antwerp before Emily Atkinson, Giselle Ansley, Emily Defroand, Jemma Wolven and Anna Toman completed the rout.

Following that, the defender was introduced from the bench in both of England’s games against Holland.

But, unfortunately, her team fell to 6-2 and 5-1 defeats.

The fixtures had teed van Berkel & Co up nicely for the championships, though.

The 18-year-old, who plays for Conference West side Trojans, made a substitute appearance in their opening pool B game – a 5-0 win over France.

She defended admirably as Emily Defroand, Emily Atkinson and Jo Hunter, with three, confirmed the victory.

Van Berkel then played a cameo role in a 1-0 defeat to Spain before England defeated Belgium to progress to the semi-finals.

They were, however, beaten 4-1 by the host nation before finishing in style with a 3-2 win over Germany in the third-place play-off.

Goals from Jo Hunter, Josie Inverdale and Shona McCallin secured the podium place.
