Horrod hails Southsea Nomads after they crush rivals on 3G

Nomads took a real liking to the artificial surface and ran in six tries.

Club captain Ben Horrod was not only delighted by the result but also with the manner of the performance.

‘The lads put together a really good performance – particularly in the second half,’ he said.

‘Then we spread the ball and used the width of the pitch to our advantage.

‘There were lots of good individual performances all over the pitch but our back-row were superb.

‘They carried well, tackled, turned the ball over and supported all over the pitch.

‘Our defence, led by centres Tobias Cutler and Matt Painter, was excellent as well.

‘They stopped everything that came towards them.

‘We still have things to work on.

‘But it feels great to pick up a big win over a team close to us in the league.’

Jonathan Branston knocked over two early penalties before the visitors hit back to lead through a converted try.

From that point, however, Nomads took charge.

England Deaf international Aaron Beesley scored Nomads’ first try of 2016 as he stretched over the line from a close-range ruck.

Chris Marsh extended the home side’s lead when he capitalised on a fumble from the visitors to sprint home from 30 yards.

A weaving run brought Branston a try – the first of two.

And in the second half, replacement Paul Hogden also scored within two minutes of entering the fray.

Beesley also added a second try of his own as the home side cruised to victory.

First team coach Jamie Clayson was also beaming with pride.

‘We dominated the game from the first minute,’ said Clayson.

‘The work of the forwards was fantastic and the backs ran good lines.

‘We were by far the better team.’
