Jones at the double as Fareham show true grit

The home side trailed 1-0 and then 2-1 in their South Clubs’ Women’s League division 3B encounter before triumphing 3-2 at Henry Cort.

Lemon thought it was a complete team performance and put to bed the memory of their 20-minute blip in their last meeting.

He said: ‘It was an excellent all-round team performance, all 14 players played really well.

‘We had nothing to lose. We showed great character to come back into it twice.

‘We dominated them in the second half.

‘We showed grit and determination to come out with the win.’

Fareham gave league debuts to two 14-year-olds in Sophie Raymond and Tara Lemon, both of whom did extremely well against tough opponents.

Both teams started well but a controversial plenty flick was awarded to East Grinstead and was put away to give the visitors a 28th-minute lead.

Six minutes later, though, the hosts were back on level terms thanks to a great strike from Emma Jones.

Fareham fell behind for the second time late in the half from a well-taken penalty corner.

The Henry Cort outfit remained positive after the break, however, and equalised in the 40th minute through Vicky Field.

Lemon’s side continued to put the pressure on East Grinstead’s defence throughout the second half and they were rewarded late on with a great finish from Jones.

Fareham coped with the late attacks to secure the three points and move up to joint third in the table.

They are level on 26 points but behind on goal difference to Trojans II, who they play next Saturday (10.30am).

However, there are a couple of injury concerns going into the derby.

Captain Heidi Podd is out for at least three weeks after breaking her thumb in the recent win over Guildford.

Meanwhile, Hannah Oldham sustained a nasty head injury which required stitches on Saturday and could not continue.
