Mermaid slay Dragon in entertaining encounter

Mermaid leapfrogged George & Dragon in Portsmouth Summer League division C after edging past their opponents 5-4 in an entertaining nine-leg encounter.

Jamie Andrews, Gary Horby and James Wooley propelled Mermaid into a 3-0 lead, before John Wyatt got George off the mark.

Mermaid wasted no further time in securing victory with Stuart Edwards and William Messinbird putting them 5-1 up.

George made the scoreline more respectable as Philip North, Shane Plummer and Frank Woodward won the remaining ties.

Nell Gwynne drop to the foot of division D after going down 6-3 to Clarence Gardens.

Lee Robertson and Michael Bowbrick won the first two legs for Clarence before Ethan Dennis halved Nell’s deficit.

Clarence moved within a leg of winning the match as Ken Brown and Aaron Shambrook put them 4-1 up.

Dan Shaw kept Nell in the match but it was to no avail as Dan Shambrook and Josh Andrews were both on the mark for Clarence.

Nell’s Ben Lloyd took the last leg as a consolation.

Phoenix North End B drop to third place in division A after after suffering a first defeat of the season (5-4) at the hands of Newcome Arms A.

Phoenix took a 3-1 lead thanks to Lee Todd, Steve Todd and Dan Eade – 15-dart leg – with only Del Thomson registering an early win for Newcome.

Paul Richmond notched a 14-dart leg, 180 and 102 finish as he kick-started Newcome and they went on to take a 4-3 lead as John Richmond and Darren Barnes – 16-darter – took the next two sets.

Phoenix’s Bob Hey won the penultimate leg to force a decider which Darrell Manchip won for Newcome, scoring 180 in the process.

Artillery Arms beat Duke of Devonshire A 6-3 to sit fifth in division B.

Roy Morran and Graham Davies got Artillery off to a good start before Paul Simmonds pulled a leg back for Duke.

Artillery rattled off four on the trot with Paul Richardson, Robert Osborn, Gary Cummings and Steve Woodage giving them an insurmountable lead.

James Stevens and John Elverson took late consolations for Duke.

Charlie Jackson (Admiral Drake B) threw a 13-dart leg while Paul Hooker (Stag A) finished a leg in 14 darts and scored 180.

Barry Stevens (Admiral Drake B) recorded 16 and 17-dart legs, Jon Bramble (Shearer Arms) had 17 and 18-dart efforts with a 110 finish and Sam Palmer (Shearer Arms) and Andy Newcombe (Jolly Taxpayer C) both registered a pair of 18-darters, with Palmer hitting a 116 game-shot.

Dave Paul (Mr Pickwick B), Steve Filby (Jolly Taxpayer C) and Michael Chandler (Eldon Arms) also threw 18-dart legs.

Brian Colenutt (Mr Pickwick B) hit a 144 check-out, Chris Jafkins (Mr Pickwick B) had a 118 finish and Steve Goodeve (Fawcett Inn) and Graham Keen (Graham Arms B) notched 113 and 102 game-shots respectively.

Colin McKean (Mr Pickwick B) fired in a maximum.
