Netball duo and hockey ace selected for Loughborough School Games

Netballers Lauren Welsh and Megan Yeardley will be among those competing in the 2018 School Games.

The duo have been selected for the Surrey Storm squad to compete in the netball at the Loughborough University event.

It is a national multi-sport competition for the UK's most talented school-age athletes taking place f rom August 30 to September 2.

Welsh, from Gosport, and Yeardley, from Lee-on-the-Solent, are both 15 and attend Bay House School. 

They reached the under-16 national club finals in 2018 with Weston Park Blades Netball Club, where they finished eighth in the country.

Yeardley was also voted the 2017-18 under-16 Weston Park Blades blue player of the year.

Meanwhile, Serena White, from Portsmouth, has been selected to be part of the England Girls White squad in Hockey at the School Games.

White, who is a student at the Portsmouth Grammar School and is a member of the Havant Hockey Club, already has an impressive record of success having won the Hampshire Cup three consecutive years, as well as being selected for the Futures Cup and the England Hockey AASE programme.

More than 1,400 athletes will compete across 11 sports at the School Games.

This year the School Games has introduced four new sports (canoeing, rowing, laser run, netball and triathlon).

The event will give many young people, across a variety of different sports, an experience of high-level competition in a multi-sport environment similar to an Olympic or Paralympic Games.

Athletes will experience the excitement of competing at the highest level, living in a dedicated Athletes' Village on the Loughborough University campus and taking part in the School Games ceremony.

Previous competitors include Paralympic champions Hannah Cockroft, Ellie Simmonds and Jonnie Peacock, Olympic champion Adam Peaty, heptathlete Katarina Johnson-Thompson and sprinter Adam Gemili.

The 2018 School Games is supported by National Lottery funding from Sport England and Home Country Sports Councils and is delivered by the Youth Sport Trust.
