Hussey full of pride as Poppies bloom

In just three seasons the team has developed into a formidable force.

And they have continued their form into the current campaign – kicking off with five consecutive wins.

Captain Jacqui Hussey could not be more proud of her Poppies.

She said: ‘I’m so proud of what the girls have achieved.

‘Considering the team has an age range of 13 to 50, it seems to work.

‘We have managed to blend the old with the new.

‘We have now made a good start to the summer season – with five out of five wins.

‘Every member of the team brings something different – which makes us quite unique.

‘It would be unfair to single out any player for being the best as each one deserves a mention.’

Purbrook currently have four teams in the Portsmouth League.

And they are all lead by dedicated captains.

Hussey, who is also the chairwoman of the club, is looking forward to an exciting year ahead.

Changes to the current committee are imminent – with new faces and fresh ideas expected.

Hussey has a clear vision for the club and is focused on the development of the junior and adult sections.

Purbrook now has seven UKCC accredited coaches.

Among them are Charlotte Belcher, Maddy Brooks, Lauren Hogg and Lottie Searle, who are all under 18 and recently passed their level one exams.

Hussey has thanked the committee members and parents for their dedication and contributions.

She added: ‘It is a real honour to be part of such a wonderful and exciting club.’

Poppies maintained their unbeaten record and second spot in the division three standings with an 18-10 triumph over Springers Right.

Grace Robinson showed great maturity after she was called up from the Polkadots to help her club-mates.

Elsewhere in division three, Pebbles edged to a narrow win against Springers Left.

They were 23-22 victors in the final reckoning.

Fishbourne Flames beat Westowen Reds 22-15 – despite some super shooting from Westowen’s Sheila Osborne.

It was the battle for top spot when Hornets faced Cocktails.

And Cocktails held on to their small lead to remain top as the game ended 36-34.

Georgia Brett provided scintillating shooting for Cocktails.
